Lo! he comes with clouds descending
For today, we have a wonderful advent hymn to share, one which may be less familiar to you. “Lo! he comes with clouds descending” is a vibrant musical imagining of the glorious return of Christ, in words inspired by scripture and written by the Rev. Charles Wesley. An incredible tapestry of Bible verses relating to the second coming, the hymn references His descent, in great power and glory as upon the clouds, beheld by all the peoples of the earth, even those who nailed him to the cross and pierced his side (Mk. 14:62, Rev 1:7, Mat. 24:30-31). The final stanza is a magnificent expression of praise to the Lord Jesus Christ, and concludes with an impassioned plea for the speedy return of the Messiah, as in Revelation 22:20.
I hope you’ll enjoy this powerful hymn, rich with imagery, which has been multi-tracked for you by the members of the MLUMC choir.
Lo! he comes with clouds descending,
once for favored sinners slain;
thousand, thousand saints attending
swell the triumph of his train.
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!
God appears on earth to reign.
